PRR 9329, GS-4M, #2 of 2, 1960
Title:  PRR 9329, GS-4M, #2 of 2, 1960
Description:  Yard Power. Here is the second of two successive original photos that I took in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 2 August 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9329 and #9330. Both are GS-4M switchers built by General Electric in June of 1948, rated at 380 horsepower each, and retired in February of 1966 after just 18 years of revenue service. Here, the crew is "flat switching" a string of gondolas. Partially visible in the left background is a not-so-bald "Bald Hill."

PRR 8906, AS-16M, 1960
Title:  PRR 8906, AS-16M, 1960
Description:  Yard Power. Here is an original photo that I took in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 1 August 1960. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8906, an AS-16M road switcher built by the American Locomotive Company in April of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in October of 1967 after just 16 years of revenue service. In this context, its shifting cars under the Union Street Bridge. Note the hopper cars which have been marshalled for reconditioning in the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop. From 1834 to 1854, this whole area was the water-filled basin for the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal. The structures on the other side of South Juniata Street served patrons of the western end of the Canal and the eastern end of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. Passengers and cargo were both loaded and off-loaded here.
