Description: |
Sweetland. Here is the third of three successive 35mm color slides of photos by David R. Sweetland that were taken in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in July of 1959. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8705 and #8703. Both are FS-24M road switchers built by Fairbanks-Morse in September of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. They are serving as rear-end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train that has already begun passing through the New Portage Tunnel on its way down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Altoona and points East. |

PRR 8705, FS-24M, 1960 |
Description: |
Gallitzin. Here is an original photo that I took at the State Route 53 Bridge near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in November of 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8703 and #8705. Both are FS-24M "Train Masters" built by Fairbanks-Morse and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8703 was constructed in August of 1956, while #8705 was built in September of the same year. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers for an eastbound coal train that's heading toward Gallitzin and the New Portage Tunnel. ("Red Shift" slide converted to Black & White.) |
