Here is page one of a four-page article by Frederick Westing entitled "Birth Of The Broadway." It was published originally in the March 1952 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 52. Photo Caption: "In this period photo of 1906, E-3a class Atlantic type No. 374 slips the Pennsylvania Special through the interlocking plant at Zoo Tower at West Philadelphia. Only five wooden cars made up the Special's consist in a day when train length had to be short for speed." Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #374, an E-3A (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata during 1905 and retired in March of 1932 after 27 years of faithful service. |

Photo Caption: "On her maiden run west, No. 29 ~ the Pennsylvania Special ~ gathers speed through Bergen Cut outside Jersey City with two sleepers, a diner, and a lounge-baggage car. On this memorable trip, Engineer 'Jimmie' Lee gripped the throttle of No. 1395, the high-mounted American Standard." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1395, a D-16A (4-4-0) "American" built in Juniata during May of 1898, rebuilt as a D-16 in October of 1911, and retired in March of 1923 after 25 years of faithful service. |

Photo Caption: "In this rare photo of 1910 taken near the Zoo interlocker, the Pennsylvania Special is being hauled by J-28 class No. 2761, a big Prarie type demonstrator built for the road by Alco. The 80"-drivered 2-6-2, similar to New York Central power of that period, did not last long." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #2761, a J-28 (2-6-2) "Prairie" built by the American Locomotive Company during July of 1905, renumbered 02761 in 1918, and retired in November of 1921 after just 16 years of experimental service. |
